The Park El Monte neighborhood is in the northwest part of Tucson. It is bordered by West Wetmore on the north, North Romero Road on the east, North La Cholla Boulevard on the west, and West Gardner Lane on the south.
Homes in this neighborhood were mainly built in the late 1950s and 1960s. The single-family dwellings are constructed of brick and are moderately priced. Most are landscaped with natural rock, along with mesquite and cacti.
Park El Monte residents are only a short drive from Sweetwater Wetlands Park. The wetlands, built in 1996, are part of a waste-water reclamation project. They are home to close to 250 species of birds, along with numerous types of insects. This park is a popular attraction for amateur and professional photographers alike. Bird watchers routinely enjoy spending time at Sweetwater Wetlands Park.
Another nearby attraction is the Gadsden-Pacific Division Toy Train Operating Museum. The museum is open on the second and fourth Sundays of the month and on Saturdays in December from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Visitors come to delight in numerous toy trains, while collectors come to buy and sell trains. The museum is home to a donated Rio Grande steel-sided caboose.
