This large community functions much like its own city, offering many commercial offerings, including a supermarket, pharmacy, and several popular eateries. Cottonwood Elementary and Desert Sky Middle Schools are also located within the residential area. Near the center of the residential area is Purple Heart Park, a neighborhood park with several baseball fields, walking paths, and an outdoor swimming pool. There is also a good amount of open space here for other sports and games.

Just outside of neighborhood bounds to the southwest is Vail Academy and High School, a convenient education option for the older children residing in Rita Ranch.

This community is also just a short drive from the Pima County Fairgrounds, Fred Enke Golf Course, and the many mountain parks and natural areas that surround the Santa Catalina Mountains to the northeast.
