Arlanzas, Riverside is an irregularly-shaped neighborhood that is bordered, roughly, by the Santa Ana River Trail on the north; the Santa Ana River Trail, Hole Lake, and Van Buren Boulevard on the east; California Avenue on the south; and Tyler Street, Hedrick Avenue, Crest Avenue, Cypress Avenue, and Tyler Street on the west. The Arlanzas neighborhood has three elementary schools: Terrace, Arlanza, and Foothill. The Wells Intermediate School and North Vista High School also occupy the neighborhood.
Challen Park, Bryant Park, and Rutland Park all lie within the neighborhood. The Santa Ana River Wildlife Area and the Hole Lake Site sit right across the neighborhood’s border. The Riverside Airport is also very close by.
The Solander Center, a new fitness and community center, opened in Bryant Park in 2004. The $5.7 million park offers youth classes in dancing, cheerleading, karate, and boxing. The community center’s goal is to teach the neighborhood’s young people discipline and responsibility. The center also offers fitness programs and coaching to adults and seniors. Bryant Park also has sports fields, playgrounds, and picnic areas.
The neighborhood dates back to the early 1800s, when it was part of Rancho La Sierra. It became an army camp during World War II, housing almost 600 thousand soldiers and workers. Arlanzas became part of the City of Riverside in 1961.
Housing consists of modern houses and apartments as well as bungalows that were converted from the original army barracks. The land is flat is some places and quite hilly in others.
