Twenty miles west of downtown Jacksonville, the neighborhood of Otis is located directly above the popular Cecil Recreation Complex. To the north is the Whitehouse Naval Outlying Field, to the east is the Bull’s Bay Highway, and several miles to the west is the Osceola National Forest.

As the nearest community to the 17,000-acre regional destination, residents enjoy easy access to a gymnasium, basketball and racquetball courts, softball field, aquatics center, and the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. A community center holds group exercise classes and local events. East of the complex, the rural Jacksonville Farms area is home to hay rides and pony rides.

The neighborhood of Otis is a small, semi-rural community with several of its own shops and churches. But because of its proximity to the complex, residents are also less than a mile from major restaurants and shopping centers that have popped up along nearby West Beaver Street, which borders the large facility. The public Herlong Airport and several popular flea markets are also close by.

Children in the area attend Whitehouse Elementary School, situated near Whitehouse Park, and buses take students to Baldwin Middle-Senior High School several miles outside of town.

On the other side of the large Cecil Center is Jennings State Forest, a large nature preserve ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing, and the Branan Field Mitigation Park Wildlife Restoration. As the Cecil area develops, Branan Field offers a safe haven for natural pine forests and native wildlife, as well as hiking for locals.

With such close access to one of Jacksonville’s premier attractions, it’s no wonder that the Otis population is growing fast.
