The Lakes is considered a Minneapolis neighborhood, though it is actually located in the outlying suburbs, northeast of Blaine Town Square, and not within the city of Minneapolis proper.

Boundaries of this Minnesota neighborhood touch Radisson Road Northeast and meet 125th Avenue Northeast. Roads enter this neighborhood from these streets, with residential areas on the interior primarily made up of circles, cul-de-sacs, and the like.

This neighborhood is master planned and covers 1,080 acres. Lakes, ponds, and waterways are key elements in this community. Making up the central focus are 159 acres of interconnected waterways and 1.4 miles of publicly accessible shoreline. Many residents are able to travel about the neighborhood by water.

Near the northern border of The Lakes, in the vicinity of Marina Circle Drive Northeast and Lakes Parkway Northeast, the city of Blaine took advantage of an attraction to make a city park. Lakeside Commons Park offers canoe and kayak rentals, a swimming beach and a spray pad, a playground, and a volleyball court, among other features.

Due to the relative newness of The Lakes, the area is quite open, with young trees and grassy areas the norm as far as foliage. Homes in the community are large and modern. A view of the various waterways is prevalent, even for homes not situated on one of them.

A few businesses reside on the outlying roads of this neighborhood, though it is still less than three miles to Blaine Town Square for additional conveniences. Downtown Minneapolis is approximately 21 miles away, about a 30-minute drive from The Lakes.
