In the early 1900s, New Hope was part of the Crystal Lake Township and consisted mainly of family farms. When Crystal Lake decided to incorporate in 1936, the rural residents in the western section of the town decided to form their own township, and New Hope was formed. New Hope became a city on its own in 1953, mainly to prevent land from being annexed. The community has grown rapidly since then, mainly due to its picturesque landscape and its proximity to downtown Minneapolis.
