Waldo Neighborhood
In such a historic district as Waldo, even the streets have a story. The west boundary of the neighborhood, Ward Parkway, was designed in the early 1900s to be something special. Even today it has a distinctive feel. The eastern boundary, Wornall Road, was named for John Wornall, who built a home near here in 1858. Along Wornall, streetcars once ran. They are long gone, but the track endures, and is now called Trolley Track Trail.
The Trolley Track Trail is now part of the “Rails to Trails” program. It is a great 4.5-mile path for biking and hiking, and the trail is also wheelchair accessible. The original trolley shelter is preserved.
The John Wornall House Museum, dating to Civil War days, is just north. Soldiers from both sides ransacked the house, built in 1858, and tried to murder Wornall. Today, it is a great little museum with year-round programs.
In this area of Kansas City, there are no sharp divisions between historic, shopping, entertainment, and cultural areas. Shopping in nearby Country Club Plaza is delightful, with 180 stores in a 14-block area. But many visitors who come here each year come to admire the Mediterranean-style architecture, modeled on Seville, Spain. Built in the 1920s, it was the nation’s first planned shopping area. Major retailers and great specialty shops can be found at the Plaza.
Westport Plaza, another nearby shopping and entertainment district, was given National Historic Trail status to preserve its past. While it is now the best spot for nightlife in Kansas City, it was once the beginning of the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails. It is about five miles north of Waldo, a short bus ride away.
Huge Swope Park lies to the east and Penn Valley Park is just north, and both are accessible by public transit. At Penn Park locals enjoy tennis courts and an off-leash dog park. Visitors flock to the World War I Museum on the park grounds. Also in the Penn Park area are Union Station and Crown Center. There are many golf courses in the area. Luxury country clubs are just to the west, and public courses are found in many parks, such as Swope Park to the east.
Arts and education flourish in the area and add a feeling of excitement. Within a fifteen-minute drive are the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, The Kansas City Art Institute, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and Rockhurst University. Nelson-Atkins Art Museum is grand, and the sweeping lawn gives way to Frank A. Theis Park.
The University of Missouri at Kansas City, the largest nearby educational facility, covers many blocks. There are other small two- and four-year colleges nearby.
