Greek-themed street names include Athena Woods Lane, Crete Drive, and Grecia Woods. Avent Ferry Road runs past the neighborhood to the south, and Interstate 440/U.S. Highway 1 traverses the area on the north. Just over one mile to the west, I-440 intersects I-40. One of the most significant features of the Athens Woods neighborhood is its close proximity to North Carolina State University, which lies just over a mile east of the community. NC State is one of the state’s most prominent public universities, and is surrounded by several smaller private colleges and universities.

Within walking distance immediately south of the Athens Woods community is Lake Johnson Nature Park. This popular outdoor recreation site features a 150-acre lake surrounded by scenic trails. These trails are popular among walkers, joggers, bikers, and dog walkers, although they can be a bit challenging due to some steep inclines. The lake offers boat rentals, and the unique park shelter offers rocking chairs for relaxing and enjoying nature.

Shopping is also convenient for Athens Woods residents. Avent Ferry Shopping Center lies within walking distance to the southeast, and the Crossroads Plaza and Cary Towne Center are both a short drive to the west. Cary is one of the larger indoor malls in the area. In addition to a movie theater, a food court, and a few hundred specialty shops, the Cary Towne Center also offers Sears, JC Penney, Belk, Macy’s, and Dillard’s.

Athens Drive High School is situated just outside of neighborhood bounds to the southwest.
