Hays is a neighborhood in southeast Pittsburgh, within the 31st Ward in Allegheny County. This large community spans nearly 2.3 square miles and encompasses ZIP codes 15207, 15227, and 15236. It is bounded by East Carson Street/Highway 837 on the north, with the river located immediately on the other side. On the west, it extends to Becks Run Road, and on the east to Mifflin Road and Lebanon Road. Its southern boundary is created by Glass Run Road on the west, but the community extends along Baldwin Road on the east.

Formerly the site of an ammunition plant, the Hays community includes the 635-acre undeveloped woodland area known as Hays Woods. This natural environment constitutes the largest piece of undeveloped natural area in the city and has six streams and a waterfall. Although much of Hays is undeveloped, this is still a residential community, home to more than 525 people as of 2009. Most of the residences are in the neighborhood’s southeastern portion, along Baldwin Road. Single-family homes sit on rather spacious, well-shaded lots, surrounded by undeveloped wooded land. Many of the homes have their own above-ground swimming pools.

Immediately northeast of the Hays community are several local amenities. For family entertainment, residents head to nearby Sandcastle Waterpark. For shopping, they are just a moment’s drive from Waterfront Town Center, which spans a large expanse of land along the nearby river, adjacent to Hays.

For more shopping, entertainment, and dining options, residents of Hays are roughly 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, which offers no shortage of things to see and do. In addition to featuring a long list of cultural attractions and live music, the downtown area is host to several medical centers, sports arenas, and higher-education institutions.
