Arlington – West End Neighborhood
Arlington – West End is a nice neighborhood wrapped in a blanket of attractions in Birmingham, Alabama. The neighborhood itself is located to the south of Lomb Avenue and north of Elmwood Cemetery. Roads here are somewhat busy with a mix of residential and commercial development. Situated just off of Elmwood Cemetery, residents are close to one of the largest and most beautiful cemeteries in the area. A great deal of history can be found here and is an important part of the community.
On the north side of Arlington – West End is the Princeton Baptist Medical Center. The large medical center is not only a major employer in the area, providing numerous professional positions, it is also an important source of major medical care. Near the hospital are Walgreens and CVS Pharmacies.
One of the biggest draws to this side of Birmingham is the beautiful Greek style home of Judge William S Mudd, one of the founders of Birmingham. The home was built in the mid 1800s and is better known as the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens and located off of Cotton Avenue. Beautifully restored, the home plays host to a great collection of 19th century art and furnishings. The gardens are also quite popular and really bring out the beauty of the property.
Also within a short distance is the Birmingham Public Library off of Tuscaloosa Avenue. This large library provides a great number of programs for area residents including events aimed at getting young children excited about reading. There are also a number of groups that meet here on a regular basis such as book clubs, parenting clubs, and teen clubs.
