Five Points South Neighborhood

Five Points South is one of Birmingham’s cultural epicenters located in the heart of downtown. Its name comes from the five streets that converge into an urban, pedestrian-friendly plaza surrounded by restaurants, shops and other attractions.

Located in the middle of the downtown area in the 35205 zip code, Five Points South is home to several of Birmingham’s major attractions. The major draw in the area is the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This urban-set campus acts as the center of the neighborhood, the boundaries for which extend about a mile in each direction. Because it is located in the heart of the city, it is perfect for pedestrians and cyclists and is also home to the Birmingham Amtrak station.

Along with the University’s track and field facilities, there are several parks in the area including Glen Iris and Vulcan Parks. In addition to running and walking trails, sports fields and shade trees, the Vulcan Museum and statue, one of Birmingham’s icons. This statue and museum is of the Roman god of the forge and was seen as a symbol of the city’s growing industry and at 56-feet-tall, is the largest cast iron statue in the world.

Local restaurants flourish in Five Points South, including local favorite Giuseppe’s Cafe, an Italian and espresso bar. This restaurant is kid-friendly, but also described as “romantic,” for those seeking a date-night spot. Popular bars include Five Points Grill, Dave’s Bar and Highlands Bar and Grill.

Hotels in the area include Courtyard Birmingham Downtown, Residence Inn Birmingham and the Doubletree Hotel for those interested in an urban stay. Also located near these hotels are the medical facilities and clinics under the UAB’s schools of dentistry, optometry and medicine.
