Fountain Heights is a neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The boundaries of the neighborhood are 1st Avenue West to the south, the I-65 to the west, 17th Avenue North on the north and 19th Avenue north on the east. The zip code for Fountain Heights is 35203. This is a historic neighborhood close to downtown.
Fountain Heights Park is home to one of the 18 Recreational Centers that are run by the City of Birmingham. It is open 6 days a week and offers supervised activities. In addition there are basketball courts, a playground and picnic pavilion. There are also lots of trees and open space.
Much of this neighborhood is urban with high rise buildings, strip malls and commercial enterprises. Birmingham City Hall is one of the historic and attractive buildings in this neighborhood. It is a good looking and well maintained area but does not have the feel of a residential neighborhood. Efforts have been made to keep the area from being too sterile with the planting of trees along the edges of the streets and the pavement.
The US Social Security Administration Building is in the Fountain Heights neighborhood. The Birmingham Municipal Court and the Alabama School of Fine Arts are also located here. In the area closer to Fountain Height Park there are more family homes, some single, many multi-family and lots of apartments. There are sidewalks and the single family homes are mostly the historic bungalow style. Many of them are similar and were obviously built around the same time.
Magic City Housing is building 25 new homes in this historic neighborhood. They have received a grant that will not only help them rebuild the neighborhood but also allow people who have dreamed of owning a home but who have a limited income to fulfill that dream. They are also creating a neighborhood with tree lined streets. There are other neighborhoods that are also benefiting from these types of homes being built.
