Gate City Neighborhood

Located in eastern Birmingham, Gate City opened in the early 1950s as a public housing project. The brick multi-family units still comprise the neighborhood, which has mature trees and sidewalks along many of its roads. The Alabama neighborhood is one of many in Birmingham that takes part in a formal “citizen participation program,” where representatives from Gate City meet regularly with city leaders to talk about everything from economic development to zoning changes.

Gate City is in zip code 35206, and the neighborhood is bordered by Georgia Road on the south, Interlaken Avenue on the west, Oporto Madrid Boulevard on the east, and Interlaken Way and 68th Place S. on the north. The neighborhood is immediately north of Interstate 20, which travels through Birmingham to the west and connects to Atlanta to the east.

Residents of Gate City can walk to Lewis Park, on the west side of the community, which has a baseball field and basketball courts. Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Divine Faith Baptist Church are on the southwestern corner of the neighborhood. Shopping and restaurants are south of Gate City, along Highway 78, where residents will find Village East Shopping Center, a Walmart Supercenter, and many chain restaurants such as Olive Garden. The nearest grocery store is a Piggly Wiggly on 1st Avenue North.

Downtown Birmingham is about 10 minutes from Gate Village, an easy commute to a citywide hub for shopping, dining, and business. A regional farmer’s market is held downtown on Sundays from May through October and features locally grown produce, crafts, and freshly prepared food. The popular In the Park Summer Concert series in downtown’s Shain Park has brought bands to the city for more than 30 years.
