Inglenook Neighborhood

Inglenook is a neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The neighborhood sits in the 35127 zip code area. The neighborhood’s borders are Interstate 59 on the south, Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport on the southeast, Vanderbilt Road and Jefferson Boulevard on the west and 41st Alley on the north. While this is primarily a residential neighborhood, several streets are completely occupied by commercial properties.

This neighborhood is filled with bungalow homes from the 1920s and 1930s, although both homes from the 1950s and modern homes can be found as well. Some sidewalks line the neighborhood, but not on every street. Because home prices are affordable, this is a good neighborhood for first time home buyers. Homes sit quite close together on small yards.

Inglenook Library, a branch of the Birmingham public library, is a former firehouse that was converted in 1979. The library is open Monday through Friday in the afternoons. Inglenook Park is a small park with a ball field, a basketball court, and plenty of open space. The park also offers a Recreation Center that is open six days a week.

The nearby Inglenook Elementary School has a student population of just over 450 children between kindergarten and eighth grade.

Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport is the largest airport in Alabama, and is serviced by most major carriers. Over 130 flights to 56 cities leave the airport daily. Almost three million people pass through this airport every year.

There is very little shopping in the neighborhood, and other than a Church’s Chicken there is not much in the way of restaurants either. When residents want mall shopping, Colonial Brookwood Village lies less than seven miles from Inglenook. Stores at the mall include Aeropostale, Belk, Books-A-Million, Victoria Secret, Radio Shack, Kay Jewelers, and Macy’s.
