Woodlawn Neighborhood

The Woodlawn neighborhood, conveniently located near Interstate 59, is an older area of small Craftsman homes on small lots. The main roads forming the neighborhood’s boundaries are Aviation Avenue, 1st Avenue, Airport Highway, and 47th Street North. Birmingham International Airport occupies the northern part of the neighborhood. There are two neighborhood parks, Willowwood and Wahouna. The nearby East Lake Park offers a 45-acre lake and walking trails.

Many historic, recreational, and entertainment venues are a short drive away via I-59 to downtown Birmingham. Artistic and cultural attractions include the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Boutwell Auditorium, and the Central Library. All three are all located around Linn Park, the scene of many arts and music festivals.

The Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex sits just a few blocks away near the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

Just west a few blocks from Linn Park is the 16th Street Baptist Church and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Museum. The Alabama Jazz Museum is here as well.

Also downtown are two other favorites. The McWane Science Center gives children a chance to explore interactive science displays. The Alabama Theater has recently been restored, and is one of the finest examples of a classic movie theater in the nation.

The neighborhood offers several fast-food restaurants and a grocery store. Major retail areas lie about five miles away at Eastwood Festival Center and Village East Shopping Center. A Wal-Mart SuperCenter also calls the Woodlawn area home.

The Highland Park Golf Course is the neighborhood’s closest public course, and Pinetree Country Club is the closet private club. Oak Mountain, Tannehill, and Cheaha State Parks are within an hour’s drive.

Dabbs Area Vocational Center and Iowa Central Community College also occupy the area, offering residents affordable educational opportunities.
