Airport Heights Neighborhood

Airport Heights is located just east of downtown Anchorage next to Merrill Field, a small commuter airport. The residential area surrounding the airfield consists mostly of single-family homes and town homes, most built in the 1970s and 1980s. Schools in the area include Airport Heights Elementary School, Central Middle School, and East High School.

Along the northern border on East 5th Avenue, residents have two malls to choose from, Glenn Square and Northway Mall. Stores include Safeway, Petco, Footlocker, Old Navy, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Restaurants in Airport Heights include Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and McDonalds.

Most businesses are located on airport property or on East 5th Avenue, Commercial Drive, or East 15th Avenue, all of which circle Merrill Field. Businesses near Commercial Drive are mostly industrial and include Western Peterbuilt Truck Sales and Service, Anchorage Tank and Welding, and firms specializing in transporting goods. On the eastern edge of Merrill Field is the Alaska Regional Hospital. The People Mover bus system offers service on major streets such as Debarr Road, Bragaw Street, East 5th Avenue, and Airport Heights Drive.

The southern border juts up against Chester Creek Greenbelt Park. The Chester Creek Trail follows this mostly flat but heavily forested area to Winchester Lagoon in the west and to Russian Jack Springs Park in the east. The entire trail runs six miles and passes over wooden bridges, around duck ponds, and through grassy lowlands. Other parks include Tikishla, offering playgrounds and baseball/softball diamonds, and Kanchee Park that has picnic shelters, barbecue grills, and more playgrounds.
