Downtown Neighborhood

Downtown Anchorage had humble beginnings. It started as an overblown tent city erected by workers who had begun building what would become the Alaska Railroad. Today the downtown core is filled with mirrored skyscrapers, rustically posh hotels, and eateries offering tastes from around the world. Noted hotels include the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel & Spa, the Hilton Anchorage, and the Historic Anchorage Hotel, which is listed on the National Historic Register.

While there are chain restaurants such as White Spot and Sizzler, many establishments prefer names with a more local flair, like the Snow City Café or Glacier Brewhouse. The downtown area is where you will find City Hall, the Anchorage Museum, the Denalina Civic and Convention Bureau, and the Zumiez 5th Avenue Mall, home to the upscale Nordstrom’s department store. Most residences in the core of downtown Anchorage are apartments.

The western edge of Anchorage fronts Knik Arm. Parks along the waterfront include Resolution Park, named after Captain Cook’s ship, and Elderberry Park, home to the Oscar Anderson House Museum. Delaney Park runs from A Street in the east to P Street in the west, all along the southern edge of downtown. The People Mover bus service runs through most of downtown. Many of the streets are one-way, so study a map if you plan to drive. There are plenty of parking garages available. Bike riding in the warmer months is also catching on, and public bike racks can be found throughout the downtown core. If you are up for some recreational riding, the Terry Knowles Coastal Bike Trail runs along the waterfront. Walking is another great way to get from place to place.
