Anchorage at a Glance
Midtown Neighborhood
The Midtown neighborhood is located southeast of downtown Anchorage and is largely commercial. Hotels, including those sporting big name-brands, line up along C Street and East 36th Avenue. Examples are Midtown by Marriott, Hampton Inn Anchorage, and the more budget-minded Motel 6. Flanked in the east by Route 1, also called the New Seward Highway, and Arctic Boulevard on the west, this is where locals come for a night at the movies at the Century Theater, or to shop at the University Center Shopping Mall. The Anchorage Municipal Library is in the northern part of Midtown just off of East 36th Avenue. Big box stores such as Office Depot and Home Depot are also in the neighborhood.
Restaurants in the area of Midtown that are perfect for casual meals out include such well-known names as Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s and IHOP. Domino’s Pizza, KFC and Dairy Queen also have outlets in Midtown. There is still plenty of room for lesser-known establishments with cuisine representing different parts of the world, such as Moose’s Tooth Pizza, the Thai House, and Nino’s Italian Café. Hooters Sports Bar has also set up shop off of West Tudor Road on the southwestern end of Midtown.
Most of the residences in the area are apartments, with the majority being in buildings or complexes with more than five units. The People Mover bus system provides service throughout Midtown and to downtown Anchorage. Willow Crest Elementary School serves the area’s educational needs for its younger residents. Also nearby is St. Elias Hospital for the area’s medical needs, and there’s a bit of open green space called Pop Carr Park, both of which are located at the southern end of Midtown. Fish Creek and Campbell Creek both run through the neighborhood.
