As the name suggests, Northeast Anchorage is a community in the northeast portion of the city. This very large, primarily residential neighborhood hosts more than 23,960 residents and spans nearly 10 square miles. It is bounded by Boniface Parkway on the west and East Northern Lights Boulevard on the south. On the north and east, it extends to the boundary of the Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson, respectively. Northeast Anchorage encompasses the 99504 and 99506 ZIP codes, and it is part of Anchorage County.
The majority of the homes in Northeast Anchorage were built in the 1970s, but the 1960s and 80s saw significant development as well. In regard to income, residents of this community aren’t far behind the city’s rather affluent average.
In addition to residences, several parks can be found within community bounds, including Cheney Lake Park and Nunaka Valley Park. Muldoon Park borders the community on the south, and Russian Jack Spring Park borders the neighborhood’s western boundary. The latter is a 300-acre park that offers cross-country skiing and hiking trails used for biking and rollerblading during the summer months. Other amenities include two softball fields, a golf course, eight tennis courts, picnic areas, and the Selkregg Chalet. Considering all these nearby options, residents of Northeast Anchorage should never suffer for lack of outdoor recreation.
Neighborhood residents also enjoy proximity to several area medical centers, including the Alaska Regional Hospital. For local shopping, they head a few miles west to the Northway Mall or to Glenn Square, which are both adjacent to Merrill Field. Northeast Anchorage is also just a few miles northeast of the University Area, which hosts the University of Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska Pacific University, and several medical centers.
