Pima County, Arizona

Pima County, in south central Arizona, is named after the indigenous Pima American Indian tribe. Parts of the Tohono O’odham Nation and all of the San Xavier Indian Reservation still reside here, as well.

In this area, habitats and species from the neo-tropics intersect with the Rocky Mountains and the Sonoran Desert; so the flora, fauna, and geology are spectacular. The county is also rich in pre-Columbian archeology and historic routes such as the De Anza Trail. With over 400 bird species found here annually, many found nowhere else in the nation, Pima County is a birder’s paradise.

Nearly all the county’s population is centered in Tucson, the county seat. In a unique method of managing the county’s tourist attractions, Pima County leases land to organizations that operate attractions, and retains ownership rather than selling it. This relationship has created a strong partnership between the county and Pima County’s tourist venues, and has led to some of the best world-class attractions in Arizona.

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum showcases the plants, animals and geology of this region. This site is not only a museum, but also a zoo and botanical garden complete with mountain lions, prairie dogs and Gila monsters. Visitors have an opportunity to see more than 300 animal species and 1,200 kinds of plants. There are almost two miles of paths traversing 21 acres of beautiful desert, located just 14 miles west of Tucson.

Colossal Cave Mountain Park, on the National Register of Historic Places, rests on 2,400 beautiful acres in Vail, Arizona and showcases crystal-filled Colossal Cave, the third-largest cave in the world, formed over 320 million years ago. Cave tours, a museum, Western trail rides and wooded picnic areas are all available to visitors; special events include Spectacular Cowboy Cookouts under the stars.

Old Tucson Studios is a world-famous movie location and western theme park featuring live musicals, thrilling action-packed stunt shows, legendary gunfights and rides. This is an active film set whose credits include some of Hollywood’s biggest Westerns featuring movie heroes like John Wayne and Roy Rogers, as well as current stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.

The population of Pima County was 980,263 at the 2010 census. The median income for a household in the county was $36,758.
