Capital View Neighborhood

Capital View is a Little Rock neighborhood. The northeast corner of this neighborhood touches Cantrell Road near the Arkansas River. Two arms jut out along Wilbur D. Mills Parkway, just above the neighborhood’s center point. The southernmost border of this community sits just north of Big Dickenson Lake. Capital View is situated on bluffs and hills, giving its residents a number of vantage points for scenic views.

Six schools serve Capital View families. Two of these are elementary schools, Stephens Elementary School on West 18th Street and Woodruff Elementary School on West Seventh Street. Pulaski Heights Middle School takes children to the next level of education on North Pine Street. Among private schools, Word of Outreach Christian Academy on Asher Academy enrolls student in preschool through high school levels. The Arkansas School for the Deaf on West Markham Street serves high school students. The Arkansas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired, also on West Markham Street, serves grades seven through 12.

The major part of this neighborhood is largely residential, with a distinct architectural style evolving during its primary period of growth. This began in the 1920s and continued into the 1940s. Commonly seen architecture is Craftsman, Craftsman bungalow, and bungalow. Modest Tudor and Colonial Revival detailing adds to the character of these homes.

This neighborhood was chosen as a Best Old-House Neighborhood in 2010, when This Old House magazine selected one neighborhood for this award from each of the 50 states, plus one from Canada.

The Capital View community takes its name from the view of the Capitol building, visible from several points along Markham Street.
