When the Arkansas Territory was established in 1818, the area was divided up into five counties. Pulaski was one of those original counties. It grew rather quickly, and today it is the largest county in the state. Little Rock, the county seat, is the largest city in Arkansas and its capital.
As the heart of the county, Little Rock is thriving. It is home to major corporations, such as Acxiom and Dillard’s Department Stores, and major universities such as the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. The area is also culturally rich, with places such as the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, the Robinson Center Music Hall, the Arkansas Art Center, and the Arkansas Arboretum. The Quapaw Quarter is a historic district that includes tours of the Antebellum and Victorian homes. The Clinton Presidential Library, River Market District, the Little Rock Zoo, and Cathedral of St. Andrew are all must-see locations for residents and visitors. America’s first water theme park, Willow Springs Water Park, was built here in 1928.
Pinnacle Mountain State Park, located in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, is slightly northwest of Little Rock. Hikers will enjoy this park – a Base Trail loops around the mountain and is 3.5 miles long. Two other trails lead to the summit – the West Summit Trail and the East Summit Trail. Serious hikers and backpackers can also tackle the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, a 223-mile trail that leads through the Ouachita Mountains. Its eastern end is near the park’s visitor’s center. Unlike other hiking trails, this one is lightly used and offers plenty of peace and solitude.
Although Little Rock is the largest city, it isn’t the only one. Other cities include Wrightsville, North Little Rock, Maumelle, Cammack Village, Jacksonville, and Sherwood.
