Alameda County, California

Located in the eastern section of the San Francisco Bay area, Alameda County is as beautiful as it is busy. Over a million residents call this county home – impressive for an area that started out as a small trolley-car suburb of San Francisco. The county seat, Oakland, is one of the largest cities in the state.

Oakland is a major port city with a lot to offer. It is a great location for sports fans — the MLB Oakland A’s baseball games and the NFL Oakland Raiders football games are both held at the O.co Coliseum. For those who prefer basketball, the NBA Golden State Warriors play at Oracle Arena.

For those who prefer the arts, Oakland has a very large community of artists and has a varied and extensive art scene. In addition to the many galleries in Oakland art enthusiasts can visit the Oakland Art Museum or attend the annual Fine Arts Festival. Other festivals include Chinatown Streetfest, Lakefest, the Oakland Greek Festival, the Montclair Jazz and Wine Festival, Oaktoberfest, the Eat Real Festival, Germanfest, and the Laurel Street Fair.

The Alameda County Fair is held at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton. The fair includes an amphitheater, a golf course, and the oldest one-mile horse racing track in the country. Pleasanton is about 25 miles from Oakland and is an upscale suburb. It is home to several businesses, including Kaiser Permanente, Oracle, and Safeway.

North of Oakland is the city of Berkeley, home to the University of California, Berkeley. UC Berkeley was established in 1868 and is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. It is the oldest university in the University of California system.

Other cities in Alameda County include Albany, Newark, Dublin, Piedmont, Fremont, Hayward, Union City, Livermore, and San Leandro. Other communities include Fairview, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Ashland, Cherryland, Asco, Brightside, Verona, Mattos, Halvern, and Kilkare Woods.
