The Colony Neighborhood

The Colony is a gated community in Calabasas. It is comprise of a single street that forms an oval loop on a hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains. It is elevated above Las Virgenes Road and has a panoramic view of the mountain tops, valleys, and canyons within this Southern California mountain range.

With the exception of the mountain highway, Las Virgenes Road (County Highway N1) the community is nearly isolated from the rest of Calabasas. Grassy slopes and canyons serve as natural borders.

This particular road not only connects The Colony with the rest of Calabasas, but it’s also a link to coast. The mountain road starts near the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu, winds up the side of the mountain and becomes Las Virgenes Road after passing through Tapia County Park.

The community is located outside a commercial zone, and is not far from Ventura Freeway (Highway 101). Within an area bound by the Las Virgenes and Ventura Freeway are the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Good Night Inn, and several restaurants, strip malls, and gas stations near the freeway.

West of The Colony is the Las Virgenes Unified School District. This particular school district covers 16 public schools in Calabasas and Agoura Hills. The closet school in the area is Indian Hills Continuation High School, a school for those needing to earn credits for graduation. Most students in the area will go to Calabasas High School or Agoura Hills High School.

The district offers an alternative program. Started in 2003, Las Virgenes Academy is a parent-driven program supported by the district. This program combines home schooling and a cooperative venture with the school district. It offers educational programs and social activities such as field trips, guest speakers, workshops, teen dances, and other curricular or extra-curricular activities.
