Fremont at a Glance
Fremont, CA Apartments for Rent
Hugging the San Francisco bay just north of San Jose, Fremont is a relatively young city in the popular Silicon Valley area. Fremont has a population of around 220,000 and it is one of the most expensive areas to live. In fact, the National Association of Realtors ranked the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont area as having the second-most expensive home prices in the nation, second only to the neighboring San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metro area.
Knowing that home prices are among the nation’s most expensive, renting an apartment in Fremont is a great idea. And with so much to see and do in this busy area, you’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth. The city wraps around Fremont Central Park, a popular park that contains Lake Elizabeth, a softball complex, the Fremont Tennis Center, and the Aqua Adventure Water Park.
Fremont became a city in 1956 when five small communities merged, but its history began long before that. In 1797, the Mission San Jose was founded in the Fremont area by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen of Spain. Today, the restored mission offers tours, is available for weddings and baptisms, hosts concerts, and includes a gift shop.
It wasn’t until the California Gold Rush that Fremont started to grow, with the town taking its name from the mission. The town Mission San Jose opened a post office in 1850 and became a popular grape-growing region. An earthquake in 1868 destroyed most of the buildings in Fremont, including the old mission.
During the early 1900s, Fremont’s picturesque landscape and location on the bay made it popular with the burgeoning movie industry. Charlie Chaplin was a frequent visitor, filming several movies in Fremont, including his iconic 1915 film, The Tramp. During the 1990s, Fremont began to boom as a high-tech city, part of Silicon Valley. 1n 1993, Apple’s first Mac computer was manufactured at a factory in Fremont.
Today, this popular area features a fantastic downtown, great shops and restaurants, and roughly 750 high-tech companies with a presence in the area. Downtown Fremont hosts a variety of special events and festivals, including Fremont Street Easts, the Fremont Burger and Brew Fest, and the Fremont Festival of the Arts. Fremont is near Coyote Hills Regional Park, a 978-acre park along the bay that offers boating, kayaking, sailing, fishing, hiking, biking, and camping.
