Fresno County covers an area of over 6000 square miles in central California. It is the state’s sixth largest county. Fresno County is located south of Stockton and north of Bakersfield, near the center of California’s San Joaquin Valley which, together with the Sacramento Valley, form the Great Central Valley, one of the distinct physical regions of the state.
Fresno County is the tenth most populous county in California with an estimated population of 931,098. The county seat is Fresno, the fifth-largest city in California.
Downtown Los Angeles is 220 miles to the south and east of Fresno County; Monterey, on the Pacific Coast, is 160 miles to the west. San Francisco is 185 miles to the northwest. Yosemite National Park and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are each approximately one hour’s drive from Fresno County.
Fresno County is one of the largest and fastest-growing counties in the state. It is also a diverse county, with nearly one-half of the residents Hispanic or Latino. More than 60 percent of Fresno County’s total population resides in the neighboring cities of Fresno and Clovis.
Fresno County is considered one of the richest and most productive agricultural counties in America, producing more than 200 commercial crops including grapes, cotton, almonds, tomatoes, milk, plums, oranges, peaches and nectarines. Many businesses here are engaged in the food processing industry in one aspect or another, including manufacturing, distribution and warehousing, back office/call center operations, and retail.
Fresno County, which takes its name from the Spanish word for “ash,” or “ash tree,” was created April 19, 1856. The present boundaries were established in 1909.
