Fresno at a Glance
Woodward Park Neighborhood
A large and well-kept regional park can be a wonderful anchor for a community. Located in the northeastern part of Fresno, California, on the South bank of the San Joaquin River between Highway 41 and Friant Road, Woodward Park is one such public space.
Founded by the late Ralph Woodward, a long-time Fresno resident, the park was created in 1968 from land given by him to the city, with a request that it be made a park and bird sanctuary. The initial 235 acres, combined with additional acres acquired later by the City of Fresno, brings the park’s size to 300 acres. Now packed with amenities, Woodward Park is the only regional park of its size in the Central Valley.
Relative to some other neighborhoods, the park’s namesake is a more stable, settled area and a bit more affluent. The median household income for the Woodward Park community is $69,238, compared to Fresno as a whole at $43,223. The median price for a house is $368,665, much higher than Fresno’s $236,150. Rents are higher here too, at $1,148 compared to Fresno’s median rent of $730.
The Southeast corner of Woodward Park harbors numerous bird species offering enthusiasts an exciting opportunity for bird watching. The park also features a multi-use amphitheatre that seats up to 2,500 people, an authentic Japanese Garden, fenced dog park, two-mile equestrian trail, exercise par course, three children’s playgrounds, a lake, three small ponds, seven picnic areas and five miles of multipurpose trails that are part of the San Joaquin River Parkway’s Lewis S. Eaton Trail, now in progress.
When complete, the Lewis S. Eaton trail system will cover 22 miles between Highway 99 and Friant Dam. The park’s numerous picnic tables make for a great picnic destination and a convenient escape from city life.
