Bixby Hill is across the street from California State University, Long Beach, which has the third largest enrollment of any university in California, with almost 40,000 students. The university is known for its excellent value and masters degree programs. Visitors and students can enjoy the University Art Museum’s collection of abstract expressionist paintings, performances at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, and the peaceful Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.
Nearby College Estates Park has basketball courts, a playground and a small community center. Marina Vista Park welcomes sports enthusiasts with tennis courts, soccer fields and softball fields. Golfers have many choices, including the Recreation Park Golf Course, a popular public course nicknamed “Big Rec.” There is also the Bixby Village Golf Course, which is a nine-hole, executive-length course. Bixby Hill is 10 minutes from Seal Beach, which is known for surfing and for having the second-longest wooden pier in California.
