Los Angeles County, California

For those longing to become a movie star – or maybe just spot one in the grocery store – it might be worthwhile to relocate to Los Angeles County, California. All six major film studios, including Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Sony, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Walt Disney Studios are located here. There is also a good deal of music recording and production in this county. Other industries thrive here, too; the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach support a large international trade industry. The aerospace industry has a presence here, as well.

This was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850. Today, the census of 2010 reports that Los Angeles County has a population of almost 10 million residents, making it the most populous county in the US. In fact, 25 percent of all California residents live in Los Angeles County. It also covers a vast area; at 4,083 square miles, it is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware, combined.

Within its boundaries are a number of principal cities, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena and Burbank. Los Angeles County borders 70 miles of coast on the Pacific Ocean and encompasses a diverse geography. The Los Angeles River, Rio Hondo, the San Gabriel River and the Santa Clara River flow into Los Angeles County; the western portion of the Mojave Desert begins in the northeastern part of the county.

Los Angeles International Airport, known to pilots as LAX, is the primary commercial airport for commercial flight in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

There are a number of colleges and universities here, including California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pepperdine University, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. The county is also known for the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, the La Brea Tar Pits and miles of beaches. Santa Monica’s pier is a well known tourist spot, famous for its Ferris wheel and bumper car rides.
