Los Angeles at a Glance
Central LA Neighborhood
Also known as East Hollywood, the Central Los Angeles area is one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Gentrification has changed the face of the neighborhood in recent years, bringing in an influx of younger, more affluent residents who have brought with them an increase in culture. Many new shops, restaurants, cafes, cars dealerships, and galleries have opened in the area in recent years.
Central Los Angeles includes the 90004 and 90029 ZIP codes. Its boundaries are Beverly Boulevard on the south, Western Avenue on the west, Hollywood Boulevard on the north and Hoover Boulevard on the south. It is one of the few areas in Los Angeles with residents who frequently turn to public transportation; the Red Line subway has stops along Vermont Avenue on Sunset and Santa Monica Boulevards.
Los Angeles City College is located in Central Los Angeles. The community college is home to a Theater Academy, helping students prepare for careers in Hollywood. Among the many famous graduates of Los Angeles City College include Academy Award-winners Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, architect Frank Gehry and author Charles Bukowski.
Central Los Angeles includes both Little Armenia and Thai Town. Some of the best world cuisine restaurants in Los Angeles are in this area. One example is Zankou Chicken, which is known throughout Los Angeles for its Armenian roasted chicken and pungent garlic paste.
Central Los Angeles’s housing reflects its diversity. Many apartments and duplexes are in the area, although the northern and eastern sections offer plenty of single-family homes. Home values in the region are far above the median home price in Los Angeles.
There are several open spaces in Central Los Angeles, including the Barnsdall Art Park. Located on the crest of Olive Hill, Barnsdall Art Park includes the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Hollyhock House, the large, grassy site includes locations for arts and recreational purposes.
