Los Angeles at a Glance
Echo Park Neighborhood
Beautiful, historic Echo Park is located in northwest Los Angeles, California. Founded in the 1880s as “Edendale,” Echo Park’s steep hills and historical architecture has made it a favorite location for artists, writers, and filmmakers for decades. Before Hollywood, there was Echo Park — the film industry began here, and Echo Park has been captured in various silent movies. Keystone Studios, built in 1912, still stands on Glendale Boulevard.
With so many famous people calling Echo Park home over the years, one resident stands out — Room 8. A stray cat that took up residence in Elysian Heights Elementary School, Room 8 lived at the school for 15 years, from when he showed up in 1952 until his death in 1968. A Cat Called Room 8, a children’s book, was written in 1966 by Virginia Finley. Room 8′s paw prints and messages from the kids who loved him are still present in the sidewalk in front of the school, and a mural of Room 8 is on the side of the school.
