A stray cat that took up residence in Elysian Heights Elementary School, Room 8 lived at the school for 15 years, from when he showed up in 1952 until his death in 1968. A Cat Called Room 8, a children’s book, was written in 1966 by Virginia Finley. Room 8′s paw prints and messages from the kids who loved him are still present in the sidewalk in front of the school, and a mural of Room 8 is on the side of the school.
