Hollywood Hills Neighborhood

With homes nestled along secluded winding canyon roads, and views stretching to downtown L.A. and the coast on a clear day, the neighborhoods that make up the Hollywood Hills have long been popular with the city’s wealthy and famous.

The Hollywood Hills neighborhoods are build into the Santa Monica Mountains, stretching from Griffith Park in the Los Feliz section of town on the east to Laurel Canyon on the west. Homes range in architecture style from modern to whimsical Old Hollywood bungalows, French-style chateaux and English cottages. The area is a mix of large homes built on hillsides to mostly smaller apartment complexes. The area falls in a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone.

Neighborhoods that make up the Hollywood Hills include Beachwood Canyon, Laurel Canyon and Mount Olympus.

The portion of the hills above the Sunset Strip is one of the most popular sections of Los Angeles for celebrities seeking privacy. Hollywood Hills residents have included everyone from modern-day celebrities Madonna and Johnny Depp to old-school Hollywood actors like Humphrey Bogart.

As secluded as homes are, the Hills are centrally-located, making them a quick drive to downtown L.A., the Westside and San Fernando Valley. The eastern portion of the Hills is off of the 101 Freeway and near Interstate 5. The neighborhoods are mostly residential, though there are some neighborhood markets and cafes in the Beachwood and Laurel Canyon areas.

On weekends and weekday afternoons, residents often can be found hiking the many trails in Griffith Park or the always popular Runyon Canyon. Another popular hike is through the neighborhoods, with residents and other Angelenos walking up steep staircases built by Italian stoneworkers in the 1920s to link the neighborhood together.
