Old Mountain View Neighborhood

Mountain View is part of California’s Silicon Valley. Google is one of the high-tech companies that call this city home. Moffett Field, hard to miss because of the giant hangers used to house airships, and NASA Ames Research are also part of modern Mountain View.

In the late 19th century, however, this was only a stagecoach stop for people traveling between San Francisco and San Jose. The city itself was incorporated in 1902 and given a name that pays tribute to the views of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Old Mountain View centers around Castro Street, named after Mariano Castro, who owned part of the 1842 Mexican land grant. The area was originally part of Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas. The historic section runs from El Camino Real to the Downtown Mountain View Station. The latter is a major transportation center. Caltrain commuter rail, the Santa Clara Valley Light Rail, buses, and shuttles all stop at this station.

Old Mountain View is home to Chez TJ, a restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide. The Tied House, a block from Castro Street, is one of the oldest brewpubs in the Bay Area. The annual Mountain View Art & Wine Festival is held on Castro Street each September. In the summer, that same street hosts a monthly classic car show that includes food and entertainment.

South of Castro Street is an area of single-family homes and apartments, most of them built between 1940 and 1969. Streets are wide, tree-lined, and pedestrian-friendly. Schools that serve the community include Mariano Castro Elementary and Edith Landels Elementary, which is adjacent to a park. St. Joseph Catholic Church also operates its own school. The Grant Road Plaza Shopping Center is south of Old Mountain View.
