As one of the original counties of California, created in 1850, one would expect Sacramento County to have a rich and colorful history; but this is still California, where everything is hip. Residents here in Sacramento County have a way of making even landmarks seem cool.
The Wente Vineyards, for example, holds the distinction of being “the oldest continuously operating, family-owned winery in California” and is a registered historical landmark. Established by Carl Wente in 1883, the vineyard made history when sons Ernest and Herman introduced California’s first varietal wine label, Sauvignon Blanc, in 1935.
Today, Wente Vineyards is recognized as one of California’s premier wine country destinations featuring a golf course and club, tasting rooms, a catering service and a gourmet restaurant. During the summer, the family hosts Concerts in the Vineyard, featuring performing artists such as the Doobie Brothers, Frankie Valli and Diana Krall.
The Murphys Historic Hotel anchors the Sacramento County town of Murphys. First opened in the summer of 1856, the hotel thrived as a Wells Fargo stagecoach stop. It was also a convenient stopover for those in route to the Calaveras Big Trees, a grove of giant sequoias considered one of the natural wonders of the nineteenth century.
Notable guests who stayed at the Murphys Hotel during its early years include Mark Twain, J.P. Morgan and former President Ulysses S. Grant. Almost 150 years after it first opened, the Murphys Hotel still hosts travelers touring the central Mother Lode region, as well as serving as a hot spot for locals.
The median income for a household in Sacramento County approaches the national average at $43,816. The county seat is Sacramento, which is also the state capital. As of 2010 the county had a population of 1,418,788.
