Fort Mason Neighborhood

Fort Mason is an affluent neighborhood of houses, renovated flats, condominiums, and apartments. Residents are close to the attractions and tourist destinations of San Francisco. With nearby freeway access, motorists can navigate San Francisco and surrounding cities. BART, MUNI, and CalTrain offer public transportation, with the San Francisco International Airport and Amtrak only a short distance away. Commuters are near the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco and its financial district. A network of the city’s bicycle lanes and trails are an alternative to the grind of a daily highway commute.

Fort Mason Center is the centerpiece of the Fort Mason neighborhood and is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Known as “Post at Point San Jose” by the Spaniards in 1776, the United States Army claimed the center in 1848 when California entered the union. Fort Mason played a critical role as a military site for the United States until the 1960s. In 1985, its port site was designated a National Historic Landmark. The center has a full schedule of cultural events. It is home to resident nonprofit organizations, theaters, museums, a Farmer’s Market, and an Outdoor Exploratorium.

Crowded, but pedestrian-friendly Chinatown is close to Fort Mason. The popular tourist attraction began with the 1849 California Gold Rush, and is one of the largest Chinese communities in North America. Although souvenir shops and restaurants attract tourists, the neighborhood’s side streets offer the best shopping and dining experiences.

Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular tourist destination with family-friendly activities. Visitors can explore historic maritime sites and dine at famous, landmark restaurants.
