San Francisco at a Glance
Diamond Heights Neighborhood
Diamond Heights is a residential neighborhood on top of one of San Francisco’s tallest hills. It is bounded by O’Shaughnessy Boulevard on the west, Portola Drive on the north, Diamond Heights Boulevard on the east, and Bosworth Street on the south.
The neighborhood features spectacular panoramic views of the city. Diamond Heights was the last part of San Francisco to be developed. Most of the housing was building in the middle of the 20th century.
Curving streets and staircases connecting one street to another are common. The neighborhood also has several parks. Glen Canyon Park is a large park, much of it undeveloped land, with hiking trails and rock formations popular with rock climbers. One corner of the park is developed, containing sports fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds.
While most of the neighborhood is residential or parkland, an open-air shopping center, anchored by a large Safeway grocery store and a branch post office, serves as the hub for the community. A playground adjacent to the shopping center is a popular sport for children and also permits dogs.
The Ruth Asawa School of the Arts High School is a magnet school, which Newsweek once named the best high school in the United States. It teaches various visual and performing arts. Its talented students are admitted by audition.
Several bus lines connect Diamond Heights to Muni Metro stations, and one goes to the BART Glen Park Station. The housing typically comes with parking spaces, so it’s easier to keep a car in Diamond Heights than in some other neighborhoods of the city.
