Glen Park Neighborhood
An eclectic mix of home styles, independently owned shops and restaurants, and a variety of neighborhood attractions make Glen Park a stimulating place to live. There is an active community garden located on the eastern boundary of the city.
Glen Park is located in zip code 94131. The community is bordered by 30th Street on the north, Mission Street on the east, Bosworth Street on the south, and Glen Canyon Park on the west. The Interstate 280 Freeway travels to the south of the neighborhood, and downtown San Francisco lies to the northeast.
One of the highlights of living in Glen Park is the Arlington Community Garden, which sits between San Jose Avenue and Arlington Street on the eastern border. Owned by the city, this poplar green space offers garden plots to individual residents.
Many Glen Park residents enjoy visiting the community’s namesake park, Glen Canyon Park, which runs along the western border of the neighborhood. This 70-acre city park is nestled in a canyon, and offers miles of trails favored by hikers, nature enthusiasts, and dog-walkers. The park features Islais Creek, which traverses the canyon, and is the last naturally-occurring stream in San Francisco. Years ago, the creek was more of a river, but urban development reduced the available water.
Also located in the neighborhood and a favorite destination for kids, are the Walter Haas Playground and the Billy Goat Hill Park. The former location features paved hiking trails through an open field, and unpaved hiking trails through forested land, a playground, and basketball courts. Adjacent Billy Goat Hill Park spans 3.5 acres and peaks with a 550-foot hilltop that offers breathtaking views of the city and bay. The park’s mix of forest and grassland make it home to a wide variety of birds, including American kestrels, barn swallows, and lesser goldfinch.
