Inner Sunset Neighborhood

The Sunset district is a residential district in the western part of the city near the ocean and Golden Gate Park. The Inner Sunset is the portion of the Sunset furthest from the ocean and closest to downtown. It extends from Arguello Boulevard and Laguna Honda Boulevard on the east to 19th Avenue on the west, and from Lincoln Way (Golden Gate Park) on the north to approximately Ortega Street on the south.

One of the best things about the Inner Sunset is its proximity to Golden Gate Park. From many portions of the Inner Sunset, it’s an easy walk to the park’s Botanical Gardens and to the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, the Japanese Tea Garden, and Stow Lake.

Another major attraction of living in the neighborhood is the shopping district centered on 9th Avenue and Irving Street, which features several blocks of mostly small, often family-owned restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and boutique stores.

While the neighborhood draws visitors to Golden Gate Park from around the world, it still retains a friendly, almost small-town feeling and has an active neighborhood association. A recent and very welcome addition to the neighborhood is the farmer’s market which runs every Sunday year-round in the parking lot between 8th and 9th Avenues near Irving Street. In addition to high-quality fresh produce, flowers, fish, and baked goods, the market sometimes offers cooking demonstrations and live entertainment and has become a popular gathering place for neighbors.

The University of California, San Francisco, a major medical center and university, is on the neighborhood’s eastern flank.

Many MUNI bus lines run through the neighborhood, and the N-Judah streetcar gives a fast ride downtown.
