NoPa Neighborhood

NoPa means “north of the Panhandle.” The Panhandle is a narrow park, half a mile long and one block wide, that extends out from the eastern end of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The boundaries of NoPa are Stanyan Street (Golden Gate Park) on the west, Fulton Street and Turk Street on the north, Divisadero Street on the east, and Hayes Street on the south.

NoPa is right next to the University of San Francisco campus. It adjoins the northeast corner of Golden Gate Park, near the Conservatory of Flowers, a historic Victorian-era greenhouse filled with exotic plants.

The NoPa neighborhood is a few blocks from the famous Haight Street, with all its stores, restaurants, bars, cafes, and opportunities for people-watching. It also adjoins a section of Divisadero Street known as the Divisadero Corridor, an up-and-coming hip/artsy area with independently-owned and creatively-imagined places to eat, drink, listen to live music in an intimate setting, and buy hand-crafted merchandise. The city recently spent 6.3 million dollars to beautify Divisadero, landscaping it with maple trees and thousands of plants, giving the street even more of a homey neighborhood feel.

NoPa residents take pride in their community. The neighborhood has an active community association. Special events include block parties and potlucks. There are playgroups for neighborhood kids. Neighbors also use online social networking tools to foster neighborhood cohesiveness, including an informative newsletter published online, Facebook and Flckr groups, and even a neighborhood Wiki with information on the latest neighborhood news, a business directory, a list of volunteer projects, and information for parents.
