Oceanview Neighborhood
Ocean View is a culturally-diverse neighborhood in the southern part of San Francisco. The area is primarily residential, with a higher percentage of single-family, owner-occupied homes than the city at large. The area containing Ocean View, along with the adjoining neighborhoods of Merced and Ingleside, is often collectively referred to as “OMI.”
The Ocean View Playground and the new Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreational Center, named after a neighborhood activist and her late husband, provide the hubs for community life. Located at these sites are facilities for playing baseball, soccer, tennis, and basketball. There are also swings and slides for the little ones, as well as a gym, community meeting rooms, and sites for picnics and barbeques. The rec center hosts special events for both children and adults.
Another community gathering place is the Ocean View Library, a two-story structure which opened in 2000. It was the first new branch to be built in San Francisco since 1969.
The neighborhood has a lot of transit options, including the Ocean View Muni Metro, BART, the I-280 freeway, and access to main roads like Alemany Boulevard.
While the neighborhood is residential, there are several major destinations nearby. Stonestown is a large shopping center with a movie multiplex. Lake Merced offers peaceful walking paths and a golf course. Stern Grove Park hosts popular, free weekly concerts in the summer.
City College borders the neighborhood, and San Francisco State University is nearby.
Ocean View is bordered by Lakeview Avenue on the north, I-280 on the east and south, and Orizaba Avenue on the west.
