Rose Garden Neighborhood

The streets of the Rose Garden neighborhood are reminders of the gracious ways of old San Jose. This neighborhood, focused on the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, is an area of lovely old homes set on quiet streets. Many mayors of San Jose grew up in this neighborhood, which has long been considered one of San Jose’s finest.

Home designs vary from classic California Ranch styles to Italianate, Mission Revival, Mid-Century Modern, and Colonial Revival. Some homes are stately mansions, but many are well-kept classic bungalows. The ZIP code of the Rose Garden is 95126. The boundaries of the neighborhood are The Alameda, I-880, Forest Avenue, North Bascom Avenue, Olive Avenue, Hester Avenue, Dana Avenue, Calaveras Avenue, Park Avenue, and Naglee Avenue, according to the Rose Garden Neighborhood Preservation Association, though some would draw the boundaries more tightly around the Municipal Rose Garden.

Almost all of the area is residential, although commercial areas exist along Naglee and Bascom Avenues, and the neighborhood contains Trace Elementary, beautiful Hoover Middle, and Lincoln High schools. Students who attend these schools hold their graduation ceremonies on the grass-covered stage of the Rose Garden. Top-rated Catholic prep school Bellarmine is nearby.

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, at Park Avenue and Naglee Avenue, is a favorite excursion. It features mummies, ancient artifacts, and tours of a replica of an Egyptian rock tomb. The museum also has a planetarium and a charming park to explore.

The Rose Garden itself is more than five acres of specimen roses, a fountain, a lawn area, a rustic stage, and redwood trees.

A supermarket and restaurants of many kinds serve the neighborhood, and Westfield Valley Fair mall and Santana Row are nearby for shopping excursions.

The Rose Garden neighborhood is a historic family enclave that its residents treasure.
