Yerba Buena Neighborhood

Yerba Buena was San Francisco’s original name until California became a United States territory in 1848. It’s now the name of a neighborhood about an hour south of San Francisco, in the greater San Jose area. It’s a small neighborhood with an area of only 0.114 square miles. It has approximately 2,500 residents.

McLaughlin Avenue serves as the neighborhood’s eastern border, while Lucretia Avenue runs along its western border. Phelan Avenue is the northernmost part of Yerba Buena, and it’s bordered to the south by Summerside Drive. Many people consider the outgoing blocks part of the neighborhood, too.

Kelley Park is only a few blocks northwest of the neighborhood, and residents sometimes consider it a part of Yerba Buena. This massive, 156-acre San Jose park is within easy walking distance of anywhere in the community. Its Japanese Friendship Garden is inviting for all ages. It features fish, and the ducks will come right up to visitors in a friendly manner.

A major attraction for resident families within Kelley Park is the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. Worthwhile cultural attractions at the park include the Portuguese Historical Museum and a history park. There’s even a family circle area of the park that can be reserved for barbecues, gatherings, or outdoor parties.

Many restaurants are within walking distance of Yerba Buena. Restaurants that are about a half-mile from the neighborhood’s center include Little Caesars Pizza, Com Tam Dat Than, Sun-Ly Chinese Restaurant, Lee Sandwiches, Hawaiian Drive Inn, and Xinh Xinh Cafe.

The Yerba Buena neighborhood is served by the San Jose Unified School District. Yerba Buena High School is a renowned school within the neighborhood itself. Other highly ranked schools within walking distance of the community include J. Wilbur Fair Junior High School, Franklin-McKinley Elementary School, Jeanne R. Meadows Elementary School, and Shirakawa Elementary School.
