Baker Neighborhood

Baker is among Denver’s oldest neighborhoods, with 80 percent of the community’s structures built in the early 1900s. Platted on land that was originally a 160-acre homestead, the area was once referred to as “South Broadway” or the “South Side.”

Baker’s first subdivisions were created in 1872. The property was annexed to the City of Denver in 1883, when the majority of the construction began. Commercial and industrial growth fueled the area’s development, and Broadway’s cable cars and the Circle Railroad encouraged travel to the community. From 1893 to 1922, Denver’s professional baseball team played at a ballpark in Baker.

The area has been home to many of Denver’s prominent people, including Sadie Likens, the first police matron of Denver; Alice Polk Hill, poet; and Mary Coyle Chase, who authored the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Harvey.” Baker was named after John Hutchinson Baker, president of the University of Colorado from 1893 to 1915.

The neighborhood has many historical properties, including numerous nineteenth-century brick houses. It contains several homes built by William Lang, a famous local architect. Baker is also home to the most Queen Anne-style houses in Denver.

One area landmark is the Mayan Theatre, built in 1930 on the remnants of the burned Queen Theater. The Mayan was completely restored in 1987 and still shows independent films. The First Avenue Hotel, built in 1906, is now fully restored. Baker itself was designated a historic district in 1985.

The neighborhood is close to a large retail center and is served by numerous bus stops and the light rail. It is also home to two large city parks, Dailey Park and the Phil Milstein Park, and the Platte River Trail. This trail is located in the northwest corner of the area. It is the neighborhood’s largest green space.
