Central Business District Lower Neighborhood

Founded in 1858 as Denver City in the Kansas Territory, Denver was a rough mining town. In 1861, it became part of the new Colorado Territory. The city’s name was shortened to Denver and it became the state capitol.

In the 1960s and 1970s, many historic buildings in the heart of downtown were demolished as part of urban renewal. Today, Downtown Denver has both office and residential high-rise buildings mixed in with government complexes. Fortunately, a few historic buildings were saved, and most have been renovated as lofts.

Downtown Denver is encased by Speer Boulevard to the west, 20th Street and 20th Avenue to the north, Park Avenue to the east, and East Colfax and Broadway to the south. Its distinct districts include LoDo (Lower Downtown), Ball Park, North Capitol Hill, the Commons Park/Riverfront, and the Central Business District.

With its towering bank and office buildings, the Central Business District is the heart of downtown Denver’s financial district. It is home to the national headquarters of major corporations and urban city residences. Its central location provides access to LoDo nightlife, cultural activities, sport’s venues, shopping, and to outdoor recreation.

The Central Business District contains more than just high-rise office complexes. Scattered throughout the district are converted warehouse lofts, retail/residential buildings, hotels, and high-rise apartment complexes. Residents can enjoy dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Denver Metro area.

Shopping venues are boundless. The 16th Street Mall, Denver Pavilions, The Tabor Center, and Writers Square are all located within the Central Business District. Fine dining can be found throughout the Central Business District.

Several sporting venues are within an easy walking distance of the Central Business District. The Colorado Rockies play at Coors Field in LoDo while the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets compete across Speer Boulevard in the Pepsi Center. Cultural events can be attended at the Denver for the Performing Arts, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, or the Colorado Convention Center.

Getting to and from the Central Business District is very convenient from this transportation hub. The district is served by light rail, the free 16th Street Mall shuttle, local bus service, regional bus service, and Amtrak train service is available at Union Station in LoDo.

Outdoor recreation is readily available to residents of the Central Business District. Residents can bike along the Cherry Creek bike path, play in the South Platte River at Confluence Park, or watch wildlife along the South Platte River Greenway. The popular Taste of Colorado is hosted in Civic Center Park every Labor Day weekend. The amusement rides at Elitch Gardens are always a popular activity in summer.
