Denver at a Glance
Highland Neighborhood
The historic Highlands neighborhood is minutes west of downtown Denver and contains a mix of single-family homes, local businesses, and artists’ colonies. It’s been home to ethnic groups since its founding and is now “the place” for downtown professionals to enjoy a suburban-type setting. Highlands has three regions – Lower Highlands (LoHi), Highlands Square, and the Tennyson Street Cultural District.
Situated on 250 acres in 1858, Highlands has panoramic views of downtown to the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west. Scattered about this revitalized neighborhood are classic Victorians, elegant Tudors, brick bungalows, and an occasional modernistic construction. Waves of Scottish, German, and Italian immigrants all left their mark on Highlands.
Located at the intersection of 32nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, Highlands Square is the heart of Highlands. A funky, hip mix of shops and restaurants surround historic residences. The Tennyson Street Cultural District thrives with art galleries, music venues, and fine ethnic dining. Lower Highlands or East Highlands borders the South Platte River and is currently undergoing revitalization.
The neighborhood lies within the 80211 zip code and is bordered by West 38th Avenue to the north, Federal Boulevard to the west, Speer Boulevard/South Platte River to the south, and Inca Street to the east. Highlands continues west along 32nd Avenue toward Sheridan Boulevard into West Highlands neighborhood. June’s Annual Highlands Street Fair takes place on 32nd Avenue and attracts thousands to its vendors and sound stages.
Highlands is great for enjoying the LoDo nightlife, easy access to recreation and sports venues, and quick downtown commutes. The three pedestrian bridges over Interstate 25 provide instant access to Coors Field, the Pepsi Center, and Commons Park. Confluence Park on the South Platte River offers relief from summer’s heat. Boating is available on nearby Sloan’s Lake Park, while football fans can walk to Invesco Field at Mile High.
