Hartford County, Connecticut

Hartford County, located in the north central part of Connecticut, has a population of 894,014 making it the second most-populated county in the state. What attracts so many residents? This area offers an irresistible combination of big-city culture and sophistication, the charm of the countryside, sparkling rivers and shoreline, centuries of history and a seemingly endless array of attractions.

Connecticut’s River Valley, alongside the Connecticut River, winds its way up from the Long Island Sound through Greater Hartford to the Canadian border. The valley offers something for everyone, from Cultural Heritage attractions to outdoor recreational activities.

Set on the northern shore of Lake Waramaug, Hopkins Vineyard, a family-owned Connecticut Century Farm maintains a tradition of making award-winning wines. Originally settled in 1787 by Elijah Hopkins, the rich and fertile acreage of Hopkins Farm was host to many diversified forms of farming over the years including sheep, race horses, grain crops, tobacco and dairy farming. In 1979, the first vines were planted and the 19th-century barn was converted into a state-of-the-art winery.

Out of more than 475 wines submitted from commercial winemakers throughout the United States, the 2008 Estate Bottled Westwind was awarded a gold medal in the American Wine Society National Commercial Wine Competition, and the 2008 Estate Bottled Duet won a silver medal.

There’s history everywhere in Hartford County, as well. The Buckingham County Historic District, added to the list in 1977, is bounded by Main and Buckingham Streets in Hartford. Covering 89 acres, the district features architecture of Italianate, Late Victorian and Colonial Revival styles, from periods between 1875 and 1924.

Hartford County has a total area of 735 square miles of land and 15 square miles of water. It is bordered by Hampden County, Massachusetts to the north, Tolland County to the east, New London County to the southeast, Middlesex County to the south, New Haven County to the southwest and Litchfield County to the west.

The median income for a household in the county is $50,756, higher than the national average; and for men seeking a wife, odds are better here than elsewhere. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are only 89 males.
