New Haven County, Connecticut

New Haven County dates back to May of 1666, when it was established along with three other counties as the first counties in Connecticut. Its towns were New Haven, Milford, and Guilford. This coastal region is rich with history and education. The colleges and universities in New Haven County are some of the best in the country and include Yale University, Quinnipiac University, University of New Haven, Post University, and Southern Connecticut State University.

With over 258 sites on the National Register of Historic Places – including 10 National Historic Landmarks – New Haven County is sewn into the fabric of United States history. The William Andrew House, built around 1750, is currently a museum. The Ward Heitman House in West Haven is one of the oldest houses in Connecticut it was built around 1725. The Quaker Farms Historic District in Oxford contains homes dating to the late 1720s and the Christ Church Episcopal, which was built in 1814. The Sterling Opera House in Derby was built in 1889 and was featured on the show, Ghost Hunters. This impressive theater has hosted such legends as Lionel Barrymore, Harry Houdini, Red Skelton, John Philip Sousa, Amelia Earhart, and D.W. Griffith. Signatures of performers still exist on the wall of the dressing room.

Additional communities in New Haven County include Hamden, Beacon Falls, Derby, Waterbury, and Cheshire. Part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, a 950-acre refuge that includes barrier beach, fragile island habitats, and tidal wetlands, is located in New Haven County.
