Uncasville is a small village in Montville. It is located in the southeastern corner of town, along the Thames River. Montville is roughly an hour northeast of New Haven and about nine miles north of New London. The Mohegan Sun is a casino resort located in Uncasville. As one of the largest casinos in the US, the resort sprawls over 240 acres along the river and features slot machines, keno, baccarat, horse and greyhound races, and gaming tables. The Mohegan Sun Arena features a theater as well as the “Wolf Den,” a ballroom, and meeting spaces. It is home to the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Connecticut Sun.
Uncas was a Mohegan leader and a prominent statesman who formed an alliance with the colonists who arrived from England in the mid 1600s. Fort Shantok, originally part of the Mohegan reservation, is now the Fort Shantok State Park. This park is a US National Historic Landmark also known as the Fort Shantok Archaeological District. The park is just south of the Mohegan Sun casino. Uncas used the fort to fend off an attack from the Narragansetts in 1645 with the help of Lt. Thomas Leffingwell and English forces.
