Brevard County, Florida

Life on the Space Coast is easy – warm, sunny days year-round, palm trees, ocean breezes … things move a little slower here, and the relaxed atmosphere suits residents just fine. Although there is some tourism, Brevard County isn’t the famous vacation destination that other parts of Florida are – it’s an hour east of Orlando and about an hour south of Daytona Beach. And while it may not have the glamour of Miami Beach or the tourism of Orlando, the Space Coast has miles of sugar-white sand, crashing waves, and a relative obscurity that translates to a little more elbow room when you spread out your beach blanket.

Brevard County is a very long, thin county that stretches 72 miles along the central East Coast of Florida, halfway between Jacksonville and Miami. This coastal area is dotted with sleepy beachfront communities and no real metro or downtown areas. The county seat is Titusville, but this is more of a symbolic “center” as courthouses are scattered across the length of this vast county. Several county administration offices are located in Viera, a small community of retirees and businesses near Melbourne.

Founded in 1844, Brevard County began as an agricultural area and still has a strong citrus-growing industry. Port Canaveral is home to many cruise terminals, and several hotels and restaurants in the area cater to cruise passengers. The military also has a strong presence in the area with Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Other major employers include Harris Corporation and Northrup Grumman. The area is referred to as the “Space Coast” because it is the location of the Kennedy Space Center. The Space Center Visitor’s Complex celebrates the area’s historic progress in space exploration.

To protect its miles of delicate wetlands and coastal areas, Brevard County contains several wildlife refuges totaling 250 square miles. These refuges include the Canaveral National Seashore, Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the St. Johns National Wildlife Refuge, and the St. Johns River Water Management District. The Windover Archaeological Site near Titusville is an important Early Archaic site that contains skeletons from around 6000 BC.

Brevard County is home to Brevard Community College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the Florida Institute of Technology. Some satellite campuses exist for the University of Central Florida as well. Communities include Merritt Island, Angel City, Port St. John, Mims, Suntree, and Eau Gallie. Cities include Satellite Beach, Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, and Cape Canaveral.

And while there are museums, historic sites, theaters, restaurants, and shops dotting the area, the true draw to the Space Coast is the laid-back beach town lifestyle. Ready to trade in your suit jacket and loafers for a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops? Grab your surf board and find your next apartment in sunny Brevard County.
