Escambia County, Florida

Escambia County, the westernmost county in Florida, has a population just under 300,000. Escambia and St. Johns counties were Florida’s original two counties; the Suwannee River is the border between them.

This county is rich in history; established in 1698, it is the location where the transfer of the Floridas from Spain to the US was arranged, as well as home to the first capital of the Territory of West Florida. But with four beaches, 19 lakes, 17 bays and 75 streams, this county mixes fun with its history.

Escambia County offers many attractions for campers, whether tent, RV or cabin camping, including a large number of campgrounds that make a camping vacation comfortable, convenient and fun.

Big Lagoon State Park, for example, located 10 miles southwest of Pensacola, is open all year round. This 655-acre park offers 75 tent, RV and group campsites with water, electricity, restrooms, fire rings, picnic tables and a dump station. The shallow waters of Big Lagoon bordering the campground allow campers to enjoy fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking. Leashed pets are allowed. Nearby attractions include the Pensacola Museum of Art, downtown Pensacola and Gulf Breeze Zoo.

Tall Oaks campground is located nearby shopping and dining facilities, golf courses, Pensacola Beach and Pensacola Naval Air Museum. The tree-lined, family-oriented campground allows year-round RV camping and provides full hookups, Wi-Fi Internet and cable television access and telephone hookups. There is a park, bath house and laundry facility on the premises and leashed pets, 10 pounds and under are welcome.

Cities here include Cantonment, Mc David, Perdido Key, Century, Molino, Walnut Hill, Gonzalez and Pensacola. The North Hill Preservation District, added to the National Register in 1983, is bounded by Blount, Palafox, Wright, Belmont, Reus and DeVilliers Streets in Pensacola. It contains 20th-century Revivals and Late Victorian architecture.

The county is bordered by Escambia County, Alabama to the north; Santa Rosa County, Florida to the east and Baldwin County, Alabama to the west.

The median income for a household in the county was $35,234. The University of West Florida and Pensacola State College are located in Escambia County.
